(soothing music)
0:09
- My name is Myles
0:09
and I live here in Greenville,
0:11
South Carolina.
0:12
I'm a husband,
0:13
I'm a father,
0:15
and also an entrepreneur.
0:16
I was I'm minding my own business,
0:18
just coming home from the gym,
0:20
thought the day was over.
0:21
It was just a normal day,
0:22
like any other day.
0:23
And I was hit by a drunk driver head on.
0:26
Really the only next memory I had was
0:29
honestly being asked if I was able
0:32
to have my leg amputated
0:34
to basically be able to survive.
0:35
I just agreed to it.
0:37
And I don't really remember too much of how I felt,
0:40
but just more so that I'm at least in good hands.
0:42
Like I'm at least here at the hospital
0:44
that I just realized like whatever has to be done
0:46
will be done.
0:47
- As far as Myles' injury spectrum.
0:49
I mean, limb and life-threatening
0:52
and he broke all four extremities.
0:54
He broke both femurs,
0:56
the top of his right tibia,
0:57
his right wrist,
0:58
severely his left humerus
1:00
and had a left elbow fracture dislocation
1:01
and compartment syndrome of all four of those extremities
1:05
in a major car wreck.
1:06
And some of those procedures were incredibly complicated.
1:09
Including his eventual amputation through his left knee,
1:12
which was not straightforward
1:13
and the fact that he is ambulating with a prosthesis
1:16
is truly remarkable.
1:18
- In the ICU.
1:19
You're just,
1:20
you're really just kind of sitting there,
1:21
just kind of being taken care of,
1:23
but being able to go downstairs
1:25
to Roger C peace for like the actual rehab part of it
1:29
that made me feel like,
1:30
all right,
1:31
now I can just go all out
1:33
and just work as hard as I can.
1:34
- So Myles' outcome
1:36
When he came to me,
1:37
he didn't really know
1:39
how he was even going to get out of bed.
1:41
So, by the time he left here,
1:43
he was getting out of bed on his own,
1:44
getting into the wheelchair by himself,
1:46
getting over basically washing himself up,
1:48
getting himself dressed for 90% of the way,
1:51
using those adaptive techniques
1:53
and strength and endurance that we worked on here.
1:55
Then versus now, gosh,
1:56
he's doing his walk with miles
1:58
and walking a mile now,
2:00
and he's in the gym all the time.
2:01
And from what I see,
2:03
he's doing amazing.
2:04
- It was great to at least start getting back.
2:08
some of these daily activities that I wasn't able to do,
2:10
obviously when I was in the hospital for so many weeks,
2:13
and then we started slowly moving
2:14
to some of these bigger things.
2:15
I remember the day,
2:16
it was so awesome to be able to get that experience
2:19
of being in a wheelchair.
2:20
Cause I'm like,
2:20
oh man, we're really getting somewhere now.
2:22
- So here in the prosthetics and orthotics department,
2:24
we'll see amputees that range from a partial foot,
2:27
all the way to a mid thigh level.
2:29
And miles case he had a through knee amputation,
2:32
which goes right through the middle of the knee joint.
2:34
So my goals pretty much fall in line
2:37
with the patient's goals.
2:38
And Myles wanted to get back to his active lifestyle.
2:41
before his accident
2:42
he was working out at the gym,
2:43
very active guy getting around.
2:45
And so our goal was to get him back to that.
2:48
- The prosthetic is a huge huge aspect
2:51
to what I'm able to do
2:52
because without this prosthetic,
2:55
without Brandon and the team,
2:56
and them really doing everything they can
2:58
to allow me to continue to have that active lifestyle.
3:03
I mean everything's about
3:03
how can we get him as active as he used to be.
3:06
And I'm doing a lot of that.
3:07
I'm in the gym a lot,
3:08
I'm doing a lot of physical activity,
3:10
nowhere close to where I can be.
3:11
And I just want to keep pushing and moving forward
3:13
to what more can I do?
3:15
What more can I do?
3:16
Because it's fun.
3:17
It's really fun to empower my family
3:19
and empower others and myself.
3:20
That just because something happened
3:22
so traumatic in your life,
3:24
it doesn't have to control your life.
3:25
You can still live a great life,
3:27
there's purpose in the pain.
3:28
So it's just something that you really work and use,
3:32
to have an incredible life.
3:33
